Building bikes

I've been doing some bike building over the last six weeks. I've built up the old Giant Peloton frame that I bought last year into a very light and quite spunky little retro ride (it's from 1999). I thought I'd use it as a commuter but the ride is a bit harsh and the geometry is a bit too aggresive so I'm going  to sell it along with my old Repco Superlite that I haven't used for ages. Here they are:



I've also picked up a cheapo noname track frame/forks secondhand for $70 a few months back. I built it up as single speed that I could chuck in the back of the car and commute to work on, on the days that I drop both kids to school. However, after trying it out for a while, I've come to the conclusion that that I'm not particularly into the single speed/fixie thing. Maybe I haven't got the gearing right, maybe my legs just aren't strong enough or maybe I just like having gears to choose from. Anyway, I'll hang it up in the shed for the moment and maybe try it out again in the future. Maybe I'll even set it up as track bike and have go at a velodrome one day...

The bike I've most enjoyed building up and riding over the last month or so is my old Repco Olympic 12 (circa 1989). I've had it for a couple of years and was using it to commute to work on when I first got into cycling. It was a decent quality bike in it's day with a Giant made CRO-MO frame from before Giant became one of the er... giants of the industry. I've always loved commuting on it because it's so comfortable - the steel frame does a great job of absorbing the cracks, bumps and foreign bodies found in bike lanes. However, the drive train shows it's age so I've built it up with modern(ish) components - 9 speed STI shifters, a compact crank, upgraded brakes and wheels etc. and it's just lovely to ride. It's a bit lighter than it was - around 11kg - heavy by modern standards, but not too bad for a vintage steel bike.

Anyway, I've done some rides around the place on it and taken it up to Eagle on the Hill a few weeks ago and it was went okay. My Scott roadie is definitely less effort to push up a hill but going down hill the old Repco felt great. The Scott is quite skitty and harsh when descending down the rougher bits on the bike path whereas the Repco felt smoother and inspired more confidence. It looks a treat too, well I think it does anyway.  I has a bit of that 'modernised old bike' look about it which is not to everyone's taste, but I really like the look of it. Here it is, in it's blue glory....

 
 
Anyway, the whole bike building thing is enormously satisfying. This one presented a few challenges, but it worked out pretty nicely in the end.

It's been six months since I've posted anything here, mainly because I've hardly been on my bike. I've come to the conclusion that I am a fair weather cyclist. I just can't seem to get motivated to ride in winter. In light of this lack of motivation, I decided to set my trainer up in the shed at the start of the winter, complete with a video setup to watch stuff while I rode. I thought I might at least be able to maintain some level of fitness throughout the winter.

I even made up a nifty little handle bar mount for my video camera and went out in April and filmed the Mt Lofty climb and a few others so I could play them while I trained, recreating the inclines etc. on my trainer (the good old Cateye Cyclosimulator - love that word). It was a nice idea but unfortunately I've only ended up getting out on the trainer a few times this winter, mainly because it's been too cold in the shed! What a wuss.....

So my winter cycling activity has been a handful of commutes to work and few short rides around the place. The net result of this apathy is basically several months with bugger all exercise and a very out of shape Graeme. I've even started to wonder if I was losing interest in cycling but I needn't have been concerned because it's started to warm up over the last month and I'm back into it. I've done around 350km in the last month and started easing myself back into the hills.

One of the highlights was a nice a ride to Victor Harbour to visit Barrie and Ruth. It was my first ride down that way since the windy Hindmarsh Island ride last April and my first ride on the Mt Compass to Victor road. I thought it was quite reasonable for cycling - most of the road has reasonable verge to ride on. The only bit I'd avoid is the bypass/ring road thing to Encounter Bay - it was pretty tight and a little hairy in places with 100km/h traffic. Next time I'll go through Victor where the road is safer. I also did Old Wilunga Hill for the first time this season and found it pretty tough. I had to stop for a breather half way up, but it was good to put a bit of work into my legs.

I also did my first run up to Mt Lofty for the season last Friday after work. It got off to bad start - I was almost skittled on Pirie St by woman who was clearly oblivious to the bike lane, let alone my presence in it. I stopped beside her and politely asked if she realised how close she was to running me over and respectfully suggested that looks next time. She seemed startled and and little worried about my gesticulating appearance at her window, but maybe it means she'll might look next time (but maybe I'm just an optimist). Pirie Street is shit to ride on and I'll avoid in the future.

Anyway, I cut though the bike path around South Tce/Hutt St, then realised that I was on the wrong path. This necessitated a U-turn involving going onto what seemed to be firm dirt but was actually quicksand. Needless to say, my front wheel buried itself and I went over. With no real damage done, I dusted myself off, stuck my chain back on and hoped the ride was going to improve. Thankfully it did. Once again, it was one of those perfectly still, warm late afternoon rides to Lofty. I got up there feeling okay and was five minutes slower than my fastest time from the Tollgate to the Summit which I'm quite happy with. However, the downhill was just a perfect run. The descent from the bollards at Crafers to the Tollgate took 11:12 minutes (at an average of 45.4km/h) which is my best effort on that run by about 40 seconds. I was pretty excited about that and, needless to say, it was great fun.

The other hill I've attempted is a bit closer to home - Morphett Road at Seacombe Heights, from Seacombe Road to the top of the hill. It's only a kilometre or so but it averages nearly 10% with a 100 metre or so bit at the end that's closer to 20%. I couldn't make it up the last bit and stopped for a breather before continuing. The problem was starting up again on the slope. It was just too steep and I didn't have the power in my legs to get going and clip in okay. I contemplated the situation for a minute and decide to roll down the hill a little bit do a u-turn back up the hill. The manoeuvre worked and made it to the top - just. I'll have to try it again when my legs done a bit more work. Here's a couple of pics:

I've registered for the Tour Down Under challenge ride in January (hopefully doing the 126km ride), so that's a fairly big goal to work towards with my fitness. Brother-in-law Troy has taken up cycling and intends to do the challenge ride too, so I'll be heading down to McLaren Vale over the next month or so and we'll start tackling some of those great climbs down there. Amy's Ride is also coming up next weekend and I'll do the 25km with the kids, as we've done for the last two years. I'm thinking I might continue on without the kids after that and tackle Old Willunga Hill and the loop back around to McLaren Vale, which should make it around 70km or so. 

I've also been doing some pre-season shopping - new tyres, knicks/jersey/socks, yet another saddle, amongst other things. The search for the perfect saddle continues. I got this latest one on Gumtree - its a 'Scor' which is BMC's home brand. Its more immediately comfortable than the Selle Italia C2 that I've been using but I need to take it out on a few more long rides in the hills to see what by posterior thinks of it after 80km +. Onwards and upwards....

One last Indian summer twilight ride

The forecast for the next week indicated that this Indian summer we're having is about to draw to a close, so I thought I'd do one more twilight ride from work to Mt Lofty last Friday night. The other reason for the ride was that my new wheels had just turned up and I wanted to try them out. They’re nothing flash, just entry level Shimano R500's which were on special online at Cycling Express for $99 (half price) with free delivery. I sometimes feel a little guilty buying bike stuff online and not from a local bike shop but, believe or not, we have more important things than my cycling habit to spend our income on (mortgage, food, school fees etc.), so I've always tried to do the bike thing on a very tight budget. Mostly this means buying stuff secondhand and sometimes online. I still do buy stuff from my LBS, but with items like these wheels, it’s pretty hard resist the online deal because it’s just so ridiculously cheap. 

So anyway, I was a little excited about my humble wheels because there’s hardly any new components on my bike. Unfortunately though, they still needed work. The back wheel was well out of true, so I spent 20 minutes getting it right, and the front was little out of whack too. Evidently that’s quite common with new wheels, especially cheaper ones, but I still think it’s a little dodgy that they leave the factory in less than perfect order. So I whacked them on and they looked a treat - the black, red and white of the wheels nicely matched the white, black and red of my frame and forks.

It was even warmer than last Friday, around 29°. I headed off from work a little earlier than last week and, after my last dodgy ride up Glen Osmond Road, I took a safer route along Duthy and Wattle Streets, then up the back streets to Cross Road and the freeway corner. Sadly the serenity was missing on the climb this week. There was a traffic restriction on the freeway so a lot of traffic was diverting up Mt Barker Road at Devil’s Elbow. It was no problem because the bike lane is mostly protected by a curb but it was a little noisy and smelly with all those trucks and buses climbing the hill.

Anyway, I’ve decided I’m not working nearly hard enough up these hills. When I start a climb I've had a tendency to put my bike into the lowest gear and just slowly plod away, leaving plenty in reserve because I’ve been unsure about how well I’ll cope. Now that I know I can get up hills okay, I’ve decided I need to start pushing myself a bit more. So, on this ride, I started to periodically drop down 2 or 3 gears, get out of the saddle and push. It worked out pretty well and it certainly felt more productive. I pushed myself fairly hard and by the time I reached the top I was breathing heavily. My time reflected the extra effort – I took almost 5 minutes off my previous best time from the Tollgate to the summit. The other benefit of getting out of the saddle a bit more was felt in my posterior - it wasn't quite so sore at the end of the ride.

Like last week, the descent was in the dark only this time I has my new little USB rechargeable LED  rear light (a Moon Gem 3.0), which was very bright and quite impressive for it's compact dimensions. I just need to get a decent front light now. I took the descent relatively easily but still managed to get up to a 20km/h average for the whole ride. Clearly, in the scheme of things, this is pretty slow but it is, nonetheless, better than I've ever done on a Lofty run before. So I'm pretty happy to start seeing some measurable progress.

My first 100

The unseasonably balmy autumn weather continues. A 30° day with light winds, a day off work, a bike and a destination is the perfect combination. It also seemed like the perfect opportunity to do my first 100km ride after the aborted ‘broken spoke’ attempt a few weeks ago.  So I mapped out a ride sticking to the Veloway and the Sea to Vines trail all the way to Willunga, then up the hill, along Range Road, down Pennys Hill and back home along the bike path. According to MapMyRide this is 94km, so I thought a run down along the Esplanade at Seacliff would be a nice way to round it up to the ton.

Hitting the road, it was indeed a perfect morning for a ride. The 35km to McLaren Vale was pretty cruisy after the first climb up the Veloway. I stopped for a stretch and a bite to eat at the rest spot on the trail just past Field St, then continued along the path to Willunga. After stocking up on Powerade at the general store, I took a deep breath and headed up Old Willunga Hill.

I’ve only done this climb once, back in January, just after the TDU. Back then, it killed me. I had fresh legs and I still had to stop for a rest a couple of times and was pretty knackered by the time I got to the top. So, I was keen to see how I’d go now, given all the climbing I’ve been doing over the past few months.

After the first kilometre of the climb it was pretty clear that my legs were noticeably stronger than they were three months ago. I settled into a nice rhythm in my granny gear and, whilst my progress was slow, I was finding it relatively easy going. I maintained that rhythm all the way to the top, feeling quite okay. It still took me 21 minutes but I was pretty pleased to make up there so comfortably. In fact, I found the other road up Willunga Hill (Victor Harbour Road - that I climbed a couple of weeks ago) to be more punishing. Anyway, now that I’ve done it, I reckon I could push a bit harder and maybe knock 4 or 5 minutes off my time (which would lift me from 489th to around 400th place out of 537 for this climb on Strava! Whooaa .… go crazy.) Here's some pics I took on the way up (I managed to not drop my phone this time).







Anyway, I stopped for a quick drink before heading off along Range Road. This is a great part of the ride – it’s a pretty quiet road with great views down the coast to left and across the rolling hills to the right. After a left turn onto Pennys Hill Road, the descent starts quickly. On this particularly quiet morning, it was extraordinarily good fun and I even managed to finally crack the 70km/h mark.

From there on it was relatively cruisy around to the end of the expressway, where I stopped for a stretch in the tunnel. I was 75 km into the journey and my legs were getting pretty sore - I was hoping there was enough left in them for the climbing up to O’Halloran Hill. Mind you, I think my bum was hurting more than my legs – might be time to try another saddle. Anyway, I forged ahead and got through the hills, rolled down the Veloway from Majors Road, then headed across to the coast for a spin along the Esplanade and back. The last 15km was fairly painful. I kept cramping up but I was determined to reach my goal and not get off the bike. So it ended up being a painfully slow and painfully painful last few kilometres.

So, all up it was a bit of a milestone ride – I finally did my ‘century’, I got up Old Willunga Hill without stopping and I did my fastest speed. Life’s just dandy.

Mt Lofty twilight ride

It was Friday afternoon and I was gazing out the window at work, admiring the uncharacteristicly balmy autumn day. I was thinking about the previous Friday and that unpleasant ride to Hindmarsh Island when I decided that, since I'd ridden my bike to work, I might try and knock off a bit early, taking advantage of the beautiful warm day, and go home via Mt Lofty Summit.

Predictably, things came up at work and I didn't get out the door until just after 4.30, but it was still a beautiful warm afternoon. I grabbed some sports drink and a protein bar or  two from the mini mart and headed for the hills. Glen Osmond Road on a Friday afternoon is busy place and, given the absence of a bike lane, I was quite relieved to make it up to the Tollgate corner.

I settled into a rhythm up the first bit along the bike path to Devils Elbow. This section has a few steep bits to give your legs a bit of a workout in preparation for the climbing to come. The path then goes on to Mt Barker Road from Devils Elbow onwards. I love the next series of bends on the west facing side of the hill, especially on days like this in the late afternoon sun. Admiring my long shadows on the rocks to my left, I snapped a few photos with my phone, which of course, I then managed to drop it on the path (I'm always dropping the bloody thing - that's why I stick to cheap phones).

What I really like about this ride is the quietness. You don't see much traffic - in fact on Friday I only saw one car on the way up and one on the way down. In my experience the most traffic up there is motorbikes going for a fang up and down the hill. Most of the time all you can hear is your breathing, your chain whirring and the birds chirping. On a warm, still afternoon like this one, all those sounds seem amplified, which makes the experience strangely intimate, given the expansive environment.

This section up to Eagle on the Hill is pretty challenging and by the time it flattens out by the ghost town servo and the old pub, you know you're alive and you're two thirds the way to the top. Cruising past the lookout you can see the TV towers at the summit off to the left. They seem like they are not much higher than you are which is deceptive because there's still quite a bit of work to do. Heading towards Crafers the path veers away from Mt Barker Road in a steady climb to the bollards at the end of the bikeway. From there it's up to the summit (via Shurdington Road for me). I catch a glimpse of the sun setting when I'm about five minutes from the top - I had hoped to get to the top before sunset but I meandered a bit today, taking photos etc.

After a brief stay at the summit it flicked my lights on and rolled down the hill. It was getting pretty dark so I took it easy on the descent. The most noteworthy event on the run home was a deer crossing the road in front of myself and another cyclist, which could potentially have been quite dangerous for all parties (deer included). 'That was unusual' I remarked to the other rider as we rolled off down the hill.



The Mt Lofty ride is clearly incredibly popular - there's hundreds of cyclists at the summit on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Its popular for good reasons - it's accessible, challenging, safe and scenic. I only did the ride for the first time six weeks ago and have become quite addicted to it, basically going up there nearly every week. This particular twilight ride was my favourite journey up there so far. As I hope you can see by the photos, it was just a great time to be riding a bike up a hill.

My (not so) Good Friday ride to Hindmarsh Island

Notes to self:
  1. Avoid riding a pushbike on the open road in 50km/h + crosswinds
  2. Avoid riding a pushbike on the open road when that road is the major route heading to Adelaide’s most popular tourist destinations, and its Good Friday morning.
  3. Loosen up a little bit with goal setting. If you have to put something off for another day because you’d be putting your life at risk by doing it, it’s not the end of the world.
  4. Accept the fact that sometimes your wife is right and you’re wrong.
The morning started off okay – I woke up, looked out the window to find a warmish cloudy morning with a gentle breeze feathering the leaves of our gum tree. I broke my fast with some bacon sarnies, guzzled some sports drink, got my gear on and stepped outside to find the gentle breeze was turning into a gentle gale. It was one of those ‘should I stay or should I go’ moments. My thinking was that the forecast was for strong winds from the west to south west and, given that I was heading south then south east, surely the worst I would experience would be some cross winds. Now, somewhere in my brain there was an obvious disconnect. Cross winds are clearly the enemy of a cyclist on single lane open road with Good Friday traffic, but in my stubborn desire to do the ride and do it now, it became ‘just a bit of cross wind’ and clearly nothing to be concerned about. I told Karolle that I’ll see her at Hindmarsh with the kids at around 1.30ish and headed onwards and upwards.

Heading up the Veloway, it certainly felt like the wind was more from the south than the west. Climbing the first bit of the Veloway to Majors Road, I contemplated how relatively easy I was now finding this climb, even with a head wind. When I first tried it a couple of years ago, I think I stopped for breath about ten times. Back then, my goal was to get up there without stopping. I used to regularly push myself really hard up this hill (to the gasping for breath stage) to reinforce to myself why I needed to give up smoking. Eventually, of course, it worked. Anyway, I noticed the head wind more on the downhill bits where I actually had to do some pedalling to maintain speed. You always feel a bit cheated when you have to pedal going downhill. And the clouds were looking grey and ominous. Perhaps this wasn’t such a good idea…

I persisted and eventually found myself at Seaford, turning onto South Road then heading up to the Victor Harbour turn off. Whilst it’s the most direct choice, it’s not the best route for a cyclist. The road up the hill to McLaren Vale is not bike friendly (which is fine because there’s a perfectly good bike path to MV, skirting the hill). There’s bugger all space on the edge of the road to ride safely in. I spent most of the ascent riding in the concrete drain on the side of the road, dodging the bits that fall off cars, bottles, cans etc. – not an ideal situation. Then of course the drain finishes two-thirds the way up. I nearly had a little woopsy  traversing  from the drain back onto the bitumen, spontaneously deciding to attempt a little bunny-hop manoeuvre (one more note to self – practice bunny hopping in a safe environment and don’t attempt it for the first time with five seconds notice when climbing a busy hill on Good Friday). Anyway, I’m sure it looked quite amusing but thankfully there were no cars passing at the time and I just managed to stay upright.

Heading down that hill and onto the long straight road towards Willunga I felt the brunt of the cross winds and the buffeting of passing trucks was a little hairy. Looking ahead, the only way is up baby (in the words of Yazz and the Plastic Population), and it’s an awful long way up. Thankfully however, veering to the left up Willunga Hill put the wind over my right shoulder so it wasn’t as bad as might have been. The hill was still relentless and I was in a serious world of pain towards the end but I managed to get up there without my feet touching the ground. This was route selection error number two - I should have taken the Old Willunga Hill Road – the Victor Harbour Road climb was a fairly unpleasant experience. For safety’s sake you need to stick well to the left of the white line on the road edge which was pretty rough and covered with stones and lots of debris. It felt like I was riding the cobblestone roads of the Paris-Robaix there for a while (which was on Easter Sunday).

I stopped at the top of the hill to look down upon what I had done and remarked to myself that it was, indeed, good. I also needed to get my arse out of the saddle for a while because my goolies had gone numb. From there it was mostly downhill to Mount Compass and it was the downhill bits that were the hairiest with the wind. Being blown around when you are doing 10km/h uphill is one thing, but dealing with cross winds at 50km/h downhill whilst trying to maintain your position in narrow strip on the edge of the road was too risky for me and I ended up slowing right down on a number of the descents which was a little frustrating. The other hazard was the amount of branches and foliage on the edge of the road because of the high winds. I ran over so many branches at speed – I avoided what I could, but it was often too dangerous to veer around the branches and other hazards. Anyway, I’m amazed that I didn’t get a puncture. 

After all that, I deserved a stop at the legendary Mount Compass bakery for a sausage roll and a chat to a fellow cyclist (sensibly, driving his car) who was clearly very impressed that I was out amongst it on such a crappy day.  For some reason that didn’t make me feel a whole lot better, nor did the fact that it started pissing down with rain as I rode out of Mt Compass. Thankfully it didn’t last long and by the time I reached the Goolwa turn off, the sun was starting to break through. It was a relief to finally be on the Goolwa Road and leaving all that horrible Victor Harbour/Port Elliot traffic behind.

The road through to Goolwa is quite good – I’d like to try it again on a nicer day. There’s a bit of climbing especially around Mosquito Hill, but it’s certainly more downhill than up. Once again, with the wind and the debris, maintaining my position on the road required a lot of concentration and bit more upper body input than usual. Eventually joining the Strathalbyn-Goolwa Road there was suddenly cars everywhere again, which was okay because the road was good and there’s a reasonable verge to ride in. Up and over the bridge at Goolwa and heading due east on to Hindmarsh Island was a great run with the now brisk westerly at my back. 

It was a bit of a relief to arrive safely at Troy and Allison’s place. The 78km trip took me 4 hours including stops, with around 1000m of climbing. I felt okay but buggered at the end and my shoulders were a little sore from all that wrestling with the bike in the winds. Movement was proving to be a little tricky at this stage so it just kicked my shoes off, sat on my annus horribilis (in the words of the Queen) put my feet up on a chair and hung out with my beautiful niece, Charlotte, while Alison and Troy buzzed around doing things.

The ride was quite stressful and was certainly a challenge given the weather conditions and the traffic. In hindsight, doing it on that day was probably a little foolish. I’d love to try it again with a few route changes, in better conditions. Anyway, the weekend beckons - 27° with light winds on both days - and the hills are calling....

My Mt Lofty Challenge ride

The Velo Adelaide Mt Lofty Challenge was a community bike ride starting in Adelaide, heading up the South Eastern Freeway to Mt Lofty, before winding its way through the Adelaide Hills and heading back to the CBD through the north eastern suburbs. There was a choice of three distances 50, 80 or 110km – I decided the 80km ride would be enough of a challenge at my current level of fitness.

The day began with a rider briefing. I stood there leaning on my bike, listening to Bike SA and SAPOL people going through the dos and don’ts, sucking on a protein gel and feeling a little pensive about the challenge ahead. I was trying to quell my self-doubts about the ride but the little voices persisted.

First on the list was my concern about whether I could complete the ride. Had I prepared enough? I’d been climbing hills for past three weeks but I hadn’t really done much other training. The first week I went up and down the four mighty pillars of Adelaide’s southern hills face zone (Cement Hill, the  Veloway, South Road and Flagstaff Road), the second and third weeks I climbed up to the Lofty summit. The Mt Lofty Challenge route profile said it was 1210m of climbing - the most I’d ever done in one ride was 780m. The distance wasn’t an issue - I’ve done 80km before but I was more concerned about the climbing. I knew what to expect from the Lofty climb but what about that ascent from Verdun back to Summertown? It didn’t look that severe but will it be too much for my commuter cyclist legs? Over the past month I’ve started to quite enjoy the hills (thanks in part, to adding a 30 teeth ‘granny gear’ to my rear cluster so I can actually get up hills without stopping), but I wouldn’t say my legs are in any way conditioned to it.

Would I cramp up like I did on the Veloway a few months back? (Mind you, I had ridden 70km on a 39 degree day which, in hindsight, wasn’t really that clever). What about my lower back? It normally starts to ache after the first 10km or so – I can put up with it okay but would the extra climbing push the pain into the red zone. And then there’s this fuzzy head and blocked sinuses that I’ve woken up with! The neurotic chatter between my ears was starting to sound like Woody Allen, or worse still, that irritating woman from Offspring.

However, in amongst all those self-doubts there’s a great sense of occasion and the excitement of being part of big community event like this. And overriding all of this is a strong determination to actually do it. I’ve made a fairly big thing of this event because, for me, this is much more than just a charity bike ride. It’s culmination of a two year cycling led reclaiming of my health and fitness. I spent 30 years tethered to my tobacco, feeling no real force of will to do anything about it. Cycling eventually broke the tether. I cycled and smoked for a year or so but when I started doing longer and steeper rides, giving up became an imperative. I enjoyed smoking, but I loved riding my bike more. Clearly they couldn’t co-exist in my life and since January 2011, they haven’t. Not that it was quite as simple as that, but in the end it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.

So getting healthy and quitting smoking really just happened by accident. I’ve never done much physical activity nor had any real interest in exercising, running or going to the gym. But the whole cycling experience has just clicked with me. The health and fitness benefits have been a fortunate consequence of that experience. And I only took it up a couple of years ago because I wanted to get the kids out of the house and doing something active. Thanks kids!

For me, one of my strategies for giving up smoking was to tell everyone about it. Avoiding the humiliation of trying and failing was a big motivation for me. A similar thing happened with the ride. I decided to put it out there a bit by setting up the fundraising website for the Smith Family a few days before the ride. They do great work - there are few nobler causes than giving kids opportunities that they wouldn’t normally have had (through no fault of their own). Lots of generous donations came in from family, friends and colleagues which proved to be a great motivator. The biggest motivation came on Sunday morning before the ride when I checked the site and found that an extraordinarily generous anonymous donor had sponsored me for $100 and left a really encouraging comment. So, any doubts I may have had, any thoughts of taking the escape route or turning left after Mt Lofty and doing the 50km ride instead of the 80, were now irrelevant. If people are prepared to put all that money down for a great cause because they believed I could do it, there’s simply no option. Just shut up and get on with it …. In the end, I raised $307 which put me in 40th place on the fundraising list, which is a good thing.

With the rider briefing over, we took off and headed up Glen Osmond to the Tollgate under a painfully slow police escort (it seemed to be about 12km/h most of the way). The sight of thousands of bikes stretching out along the road ahead of me was extraordinary. Also impressive was the diversity of bikes – it was mostly roadies but there was also loads of hybrids, flat bars and mountain bikes, a few tandems, kids pedalling furiously on those tag along things and there was even a few sadists on single speeds.

The ride up the freeway was okay but the headwind didn’t help. I did find the freeway a little bit monotonous - I prefer the bike path/Mt Barker Road route to Crafers. It has steeper climbs but there are more flat bits between them (and the scenery is better). Anyway, the company was good – I had some nice chats to a few people on the way up. There seems to be a great camaraderie and support in these big rides, especially in the back half of the bunch where the riding is  less intense. The tunnel was interesting - there was a DJ at the far end with a couple of girls dancing away. Riding through the tunnel with the music pumping and bouncing off the walls at 9 on a Sunday morning was a slightly odd experience.

I stopped for a quick drink at Crafers and headed up to Mount Lofty. Having ridden up to the summit the past two weekends I knew what to expect and I’m starting rather enjoy this part of the climb. The road was closed to traffic so it was a nice ride up there with no cars to worry about. The nasty little spike just before the first TV tower is a killer but it’s not quite so bad if you get a decent run up on the downhill bit before it. Feeling pretty pleased to have knocked off the first stage with relative ease, I celebrated with a hot cross bun and a banana at the feed station (whoo, go crazy…). I was also pleased that my head was now feeling significantly clearer and all those doubts that occupied my mind at the start line were disappearing.

Heading off into the shade of summit road I enjoyed the cool breeze and the easy spinning of the decent, then onto the road through to Summertown and Uraidla. The descending highlight of the ride was the run from Carey Gully down towards Balhannah. It’s a nice smooth road with lovely fast bends with good visibility. For a few kilometres before the decent I’d been following a woman who looked about 4’ 8”, quite stocky with big thighs and calves. Anyway she fanged it when the downhill bit started – I kept up with her for a minute or so but she was too fast for me and cleared off.  The descent was a blast. I got to my ‘terminal velocity’ of 68km/h. I can never seem go any faster than that – partly because I’ve set my bike up with gearing that helps me climb hills rather than descend them, partly because of the limited strength in my legs. After all that excitement I needed a wee, a banana and a drink top up at the particularly well organised feed station at Verdun.

The route map from Verdun back to Summertown showed that the route was quite hilly. On the profile the climbing didn’t look anywhere near as significant as the Tollgate to Lofty climb, but in reality I found the hills around Bridgewater (henceforth known as the Bastard Hills of Bridgewater) to be pretty tough going. The first on the list was the Germantown Hill climb between Verdun and Bridgewater (this was a King of the Mountain climb from the Tour Down Under a couple of years ago). It was hard yakka but I reached the top okay. I said good morning to group of people watching proceedings at the top of the hill who responded with “well done” which was very kind and seemed to make the effort worthwhile.

I trundled through Bridgewater full of warm fuzzies, oblivious to the pain that was just around the corner. The particular corner in question was the left-hander from Kain Road on to Old Mt Barker Road. As I started the climb, it wasn’t looking good ahead. I could see lots of fit looking buggers up ahead (who I assumed were doing 110km ride and had caught us up) out of their saddles pushing hard, some less fit riders in their saddles lurching and grinding every pedal stroke and a handful of people walking their bikes up the hill.

Of course, the last thing a cyclist wants to do is to stop and walk up a hill – it seriously dents your pride. It’s okay to stop at the top and reflect on your amazing achievement if you need to, but stopping half way is a major bummer. The only good thing about being beaten by a hill is that it gives you the determination and motivation to go back and try again. Anyway I got halfway up this bloody hill when it became quite clear that my legs were going to explode if I did one more push. Now, successfully stopping and unclipping when you are in that sort state on a steep hill can be a little tricky, but thankfully I managed to separate feet from bike with a certain degree of elegance. By not ungraciously toppling over into the gutter or into the path of another rider, I felt like I’d at least salvaged something from the situation. I even managed to exchange a meaningful grunt and witty comment with two other riders walking their bikes as I alighted. Anyway, after catching my breath I wandered about twenty-five metres up the hill to where it looked like the really really steep bit became just a really steep bit, and jumped back on feeling okay.

Whilst the worst was over, there was a bunch of hills ahead that were destined to be the second worst. Lots of things go through your mind when you are climbing. Now, I don’t know this for sure, but I suspect it probably doesn’t matter what level you are at – whether you a pro on L’Alpes d’Huez or an aging commuter cyclist like me who likes to do some rides in the Adelaide Hills on a sunny day – you still feel the pain and you still need to dig deep. Of course the speed and endurance are radically different – the pro will find enough to sprint to a mountain finish after riding 180km and climbing three mountains, whereas hacks like me will dig deep just to stay upright and keep pedalling until the road flattens out a little and they get some relief. But we’ll all find physical and emotional reserves to fuel our determination.

You find ways to get through it. Like a lot of people who struggle up hills, I break the really steep bits up into bite sized chunks, picking a bush or a rock every 20 metres or so to ride to. Then there’s the more psychological and emotional triggers that inspire you to keep going. It reminds me of the ‘Ride for a Reason’ banners that were on Old Willunga Hill at TDU time which basically said ‘If you think this climb is hard work, try fighting cancer’. Like most of us, I’ve known people who’ve found great courage in times of terrible adversity. For me, there’s been no more courageous soul than my niece, Belinda, who lost her battle with cancer last year. I didn’t have a lot to do with Belinda in her adult life, just seeing her at Christmas’, weddings etc., but it was always clear that she was someone who had an amazing zest for life. What wasn’t so obvious to me was her incredible courage and determination. For her family and everyone who loved her, her loss is an almost unbearable sadness. However, she also leaves an enormous legacy – the amazing strength she displayed throughout her fight with cancer undoubtedly continues to inspire many, many people. It certainly inspires me.

This climbing thing is becoming a bit of an obsession. Apart from hitting the hills every weekend, I’m also currently reading a book about the great Tour de France peaks in the Alps and the Pyrenees and I’ve downloaded all these old cycling docos from YouTube. I’m finding the historical stuff quite fascinating – the exploits of Eddy Merckx (for those who don’t know, widely considered to be greatest rider of them all) or the tragic story the 1967 tour with the great British rider Tom Simpson, who was so loaded up with amphetamines when climbing the infamous Mt Ventoux, that he pushed himself way too hard and died a couple of hundred metres before the summit. Then further back to the early days of the TDF where stages could be over 400km long over mountain roads which were basically goat tracks, with ludicrously draconian race rules. For example, if they had a mechanical problem no assistance was allowed – there was no team car following with a spare bike on the roof. The most famous mechanical problem occured with the perenially unlucky Eugene Christophe in 1913, who broke a fork while descending the Tourmalet. He had to walk to the nearest town, find a blacksmiths workshop, do the repair with no assistance (he couldn’t even have someone operate the bellows) – all of which was done under the scrutiny of race officials. So, not only did they need balls of steel back then, but they also needed to be multi-skilled.

There were no such hard hardships for me on my tour of the Adelaide Hills, but as I turned back onto the main drag at Summertown (with most of the climbing over for the day) I said ‘thank God that’s over’ to a marshal pointing me in right direction. From there it was a pretty cruisy ride through to the Ashton feed station and then down the hill through to Montacute. Once again the decent was fun - the road surface wasn’t the greatest at the start of the descent, but became smoother and faster towards the bottom. Arriving back in the suburbs along Montacute Road, I could see a knobhead in a car pulling out from a side street up ahead in front of a couple of riders. The first rider swerved and braked but the guy following clipped the first riders back wheel and went down. I pulled up to assist and fortunately he was okay - it was one of those hit the ground rolling crashes so he had just a few scrapes. I helped him get his bike sorted and trundled off down the road.

Talking about fixing bikes reminds me of the other aspect of the cycling experience that floats my boat. Over the past couple years I’ve become a reasonably competent bike mechanic. I’ve accumulated quite a collection of bikes for myself and my family. As we don’t have a lot disposable income to spend on new bikes, I’ve tended to buy good quality second hand bikes that need some TLC. So that’s meant developing quite a lot of bike knowledge and a bunch of maintenance skills, all of which I love putting good use tinkering away in the shed. It was quite satisfying to do the Mt Lofty ride on my roadie that I’d built up from scratch using decent quality (Shimano 105/Ultegra) components that I’ve acquired along the way. Also satisfying is that it only cost me around $450 to put together.

Anyway, as I was doing the Monacute descent, I had the feeling that my legs weren’t far off cramping but, given that I was basically cruising into town from there, I thought I'd get away with it. However, the route planners decided to chuck one last little hill into the ride. Stradbroke Road at Newton isn’t much of a climb, but after all that work in the hills, it was enough of a test for both of my thighs to cramp up. I got off the bike and did some stretches for 5 minutes, recovering enough to be on my way. I rode back to the city with quite a large bunch of riders who seemed to be in a justifiably buoyant mood. The only bummer was a couple of boy racers who, not content with basically having the left lane of Kensington Road to ourselves, veered into the right lane as well, much to the justifiable annoyance of tooting motorists. It doesn’t really help the cause.

I arrived at the finish line to be greeted by the cheers of Karolle and Miles, which was nice. Including stops, the 83km ride took me over  5 hours (riding time was 4 hours 25 minutes), which is very slow, but according to Strava (a website for cyclist/runners that tracks your ride using your GPS data and compares it to other Strava users), not the slowest. Overall it was a demanding ride, but I really enjoyed it. For me, the total ascent of 1440m for the ride (according to my Garmin) was monumental and is certainly not something I could have contemplated a year ago. It was also over 200 metres more climbing than the route map said, so I was pretty happy to get through it feeling okay. Actually, reaching Hindmarsh Square I felt like I had a bit left in the tank, so I reckon I probably could have done the 110km loop. Mind you I would have gotten back sometime after 3pm and everyone would have gone home. So, that’s my goal for next year - do the 110 ride in close to the same time it took me to do the 80 this year. I have to say that I’ve had a bit of a spring in my step since the ride. I see it as a defining moment in my post-smoking recovery and it gives me the confidence to tackle some 100km+ rides.

Bike SA did a superb job with the organisation of the ride – I really couldn’t fault it. The information, support, marshals, feed stations and signage were all first class. All up, a great day.

PS: The ride was two weeks ago and I’ve only just got around to posting this, so there’s now a postscript. I went out last Sunday for a ride in the hills, now confident that I could do my first century. I worked out a 102km route through the hills, down to Meadows and back home through Clarendon. About 30km into the ride, I found myself descending that nasty hill out of Bridgewater that killed me two weeks ago. I’d almost reached the bottom when I heard an ominous ping coming from my back wheel – I’d broken a spoke. Stopping and assessing the situation, I decided to disengage the back brake so the now buckled wheel wouldn’t rub on the brake pads. Given that I still had 70km to ride and I had only front brakes, I decided it was best to turn around and go home (carefully). I thought I might as well salvage something from the situation, so I rolled down to Kain Rd at the bottom of the climb, turned around and had another bash at that hill that caused me such grief a few weeks ago. Anyway I took my revenge and got through all of those hills without stopping, which was pretty satisfying.
